"If someone laughs at what you're wearing, flip them the bird! Wear what you want"
I live in the beautiful Hunter Valley, in NSW Australia.
When did your passion for the pinup scene start?
My Dad has a passion for building hot rods, so as a young teen I was taken to lots of different swap meets, car shows and nostalgia events. I fell in love with the music and the "look" but it all sort of happened slowly. Looking back through photos, I was dressing in pieces that were 50's inspired that I was picking up at op shops before I knew what I was really doing style wise. I lived for furs, nipped waists and fancy hats!
What kind of style are you influenced by?
I think when I was younger, I loved the prettiness of the 1950's cupcake dresses. The fluffy skirts and tiny waists; but also the sleek pencil skirts have been a staple for years. Now, I lean more towards the greaser/rockabilly style.
Who is most influential to your style?
I think the music scene from the mid 50's with it's mix of rock n roll and hillbilly, and the clothes that those musicians wore is a huge influence. I also reference my Nan a lot who at 83 and is still immaculately presented.
What is your favourite era?
Definitely the 1950's. Even the early 1960's. Christian Dior's "New Look" in 1947 and everything about it, I believe to be pivotal in the shape and style of the most gorgeous 50's pieces.
What are your Top 5 must have items for being the pinup you are?
1 - Eyeliner
2 - Red lips
3 - Hair flowers (or scarf)
4 - Cuffed jeans
5 - Amazing shoes
Tell us about your makeup routine and how long it takes you?
If I am doing a photo shoot or pageant I will spend a lot longer on my makeup. Up to an hour. Base, contour, highlight, blush, mascara, eyeliner, eye shadow, brow powder and lips.
My every day look is a lot more simple. Highlight, eyeliner, mascara and a little eye shadow with some lip gloss which takes me about 5 minutes.
How do you set and style your hair?
I shaved my head for charity in March so hair styling has been a breeze! At the moment I am sporting a mohawk of sorts and use my favourite pomade (nice smelling cheapie from Woolies) to help keep it up.
What's your best kept secret?
I think my best kept secret is being thrifty. I have a young family and work to a tight budget so am always on the look out for a pinup bargain. Ebay is amazing for reproduction items like belts and shoes, although sizes can be bit iffy so get to know your current measurements. I follow loads of awesome Australian stores online like MisKonduct Klothing, Kiss Kiss Bang, Atomic Cherry and Cyber Shop for sales and reduced price events. Op shops are amazing and yield fantastic stuff.
A little bit more about Miss Kitty Summers
I would love to say how important it is to dress how you feel. Don't let an unsupportive partner or family dictate how you dress. If someone laughs at what you're wearing, flip them the bird! Wear what you want, life is too short to pine after the pretty things. Buy them. Wear them everywhere. Do it.
