Pinup Secrets with Kat Coupe Deville

Updated: Aug 6, 2019

I put together a blog to help pinup ladies grow, learn and find out all our fabulous tips and tricks. When I started out it took me years to learn and source all the information to develop myself and to grow. I want to create a platform where people can go to and be inspired and influenced. To start it off here are all my pinup favourites.

Blue Mountains, NSW

When did your passion for the pinup scene start?

My passion derived from when I was a young girl, I was about 13. I had a huge admiration for Elvis movies and I'd spend every Saturday hiring the videos and submerging in them. I bought my first ever pinup style dress when I was 21 and from then slowly added dresses and trying like hell to do victory rolls with my hair. It wasn't until I was 26 that I decide to throw fire to the wind and enter myself into my first pageant, from then it became a lifestyle.

What kind of style are you influenced by?

I am absolutely besotted with the Tiki culture of the 50's but I do find a huge love for the 40's Hollywood bombshell and 60's Jackie Kennedy shift style dress. She had a very classy elegance to her. I do like to stick to a good wiggle dress though, after growing up curvy with skinny being all over magazines it is great to finally love my body and want to show off its shape.

Who is most influential to your style?

Carmen Miranda the Brazilian Bombshell has been a huge part of my style, she is crazy and fruity and beautiful and a reminder you can never have too much. I also love Jayne Mansfield, she is the classic blonde bombshell.

What is your favourite era?

I have different elements from the 40's, 50's and 60's I adore. I guess being into the pinup style for a while I have learnt a lot and developed a taste in all different eras. I have been getting more into the 70's style recently and on a hunt for a sweet pair of flared pants, I'm stinging for the muted colours. Furniture wise I'd love to fill my house with 60's style furniture and wallpaper. I love wallpaper.

What are your Top 5 must have items for being the pinup you are?

1 - Kat Von D Eyeliner

2 - Bamboo Tiki Bag

3 - Wiggle Dress - Check out Violets in May

4 - Estee Lauder Lipstick

5 - HUGE Earrings - Miz Smitten Kitten for big resin earrings and Bluebelle Vintage for my Vintage needs

Tell us about your makeup routine and how long it takes you?

Makeup really only takes about half an hour

1 - Estée Lauder Primer

2 - Estée Lauder Concealer - under eyes and in nose to hide any dark areas

3 - Estée Lauder Double wear foundation - applied vigorously with a beauty blender

4 - Laura Mercier Translucent Powder

5 - Brows! Dark brows with Napoleon Perdis, I also get Henna on my brows so it stains then skin and will give me a well shaped guide

6 - Morphe blush – 9B The Blushed Blush Palette

7 - Morphe eyeshadow – 35 Color Shimmer Nature Glo, these colours are pigmented and so much fun to blend

8 - Kat von d tattoo eyeliner - the answer to killer wings!

9 - Napoleon Perdis Mascara

10 - Glam by Manicare Eye lashes – They are easy and soft enough to apply and curve with your lid

11 - More mascara!

How do you set and style your hair?

I have short bleached hair so this works well with my style

1 - Tease the roots

2 - Spray hair with cedel the pink can, it is a classic but does the trick

3 - With small sections use a hot curling wand and with duck bill clips curl hair into a circle and pin into pin curls

4 - Blow with hair dryer and just hang out looking like a granny for an hour or more (even over night)

5 - Unclip all clips and with a detangling hair brush brush out making curly waves

6 - If you need any more height in areas use a fine tooth comb and tease underneath then smooth over with the brush. I have thinner hair so I like the illusion of there being more

7 - Mould with your hands to shape the curls

8 - Spray with Tresemme blue to hold everything in place

What's your best kept secret?

I like to map out eyeliner wings with my eyes open! I have two very different eyes and doing this has changed the way my eyeliner looks.

I also learnt that there are hair sprays and settings sprays for different things and to use at different times of your set. During the process less can be more.
