She is a horn bag and we know it!
Influenced by Kath & Kim, Drag Queens and Lucille Ball; Becca is not a pinup to question. She is a Melbourne icon and a true advocate for doing what makes you you!
When did your passion for the pinup scene start?
I’ve always loved the 50’s era- the music, the films, the fashion! I grew up listening to Elvis and Doris Day! But I didn’t truly embrace it until I attended my first rockabilly festival - Camperdown Cruise 2015 - at that point I owned one Lindy Bop pinup dress - now I have a whole pinup wardrobe! I think what really kick started my love for pinup was watching my first ever pinup competition at that festival. The girls were incredible onstage!! So inspiring! I gave myself a new year’s resolution to enter a competition- and the rest they say is history!
What kind of style are you influenced by?
I’m inspired by anything kitschy, over the top and extra. I never tried to be demure- coz that’s not me, so I try to incorporate elements of psychobilly, trashabilly (and boozabilly! haha) into what I wear and do. I love bringing pop culture into a pinup routine. My favourite comp to this day is still the time my bestie Scarlett and I (as The Twinups) recreated Kath & Kim- but pinup onstage. I think that best sums up what I’m influenced by!
Who is most influential to your style?
I love Bettie Page’s vampness, Lucille Ball’s comedic timing, and the bad ass attitude of Wanda from Crybaby. I try to be a combo of all three! I’m also obsessed with drag queens so I feel that I am very much influenced by drag culture as well.
What is your favourite era?
I would have to say the ‘50's! The start of rock n roll!!
What are your Top 5 must have items for being the pinup you are?
1 - A wiggle dress is my go to at the moment! I love embracing my curves- and wiggle dresses do that so well! It also straight away makes me feel like a bad ass!
2 - Red Lipstick! I love Australis velourlips at the moment, but Mac Ruby Woo is also great!
3 - The biggest set of fake eyelashes you’ve ever seen! I might even put on 2 sets if I’m feeling cheeky! I tend to jump between brands- depending on who has the biggest lashes at the time.
4 - Waspie! I have a What Katie Did one which is amazing! I was hesitant to try it at first because I didn’t want to be feeling uncomfortable while doing pinup- but it’s so comfy, and cinches you in the right places! Talk about va va voom!!
5 - Liquid eyeliner for that perfect winged look! My fave is L’Oréal superliner - it’s so precise!.
... and maybe a cheeky flask of alcohol in a garter...
Tell us about your makeup routine and how long it takes you?
I love makeup!! I have two routines- super pinup and express pinup! Express is usually 15 mins and sometimes done in the car! It’s foundation, brow pencil, winged eyeliner and lipstick. I do that mainly when I go to work. Super pinup is if I’m going out somewhere special, or an event or comp and I’m proud to say I spend a lot of time on that routine- usually an hour. I love doing makeup so I take my time so I can really enjoy it! That will be everything above- plus eye shadow, eyelashes, contour/blush etc, The bigger the winged eyeliner, the better! I will usually put on music while I’m getting ready, or pop on an episode of a tv show. The makeup skills I have now, I picked up along the way from pinup pals, experiments- and drag makeup tutorials on YouTube!
How do you set and style your hair?
I used to do foam roller wet sets and sleep in them overnight but my biggest discovery this year was bendy rollers!! More comfy to sleep in and better results - hair not as frizzy and set lasts longer! My fave setting spray is Miss Curlette hair setting potion- it smells wonderful and it keeps my hair set for days!
What's your best kept secret?
It’s no secret- but in pinup- remember to be true to yourself! Some people will come out and tell you that there are pinup/vintage rules that you must follow when dressing in that style - but stuff that! Rules were made to be broken - do what makes you happy!! Have fun, coz if you’re not- it’s just not worth it!!
A little bit more about Becca BamBam
I’ve made some amazing friends from this scene and I’ve never felt more confident and comfortable in my body! I highly recommend getting involved with your pinup community :)
